Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action:

The aerial part of yarrow plant is rich in flavonoids, all of which act as antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Iso-ornithine present in this plant inhibits the enzyme xanthine oxidase and therefore has anti-rheumatoid arthritis and anti-gout effects. Rutin flavonoid and camazolin compound of the plant have anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and anti-allergic effects. The alcoholic extract of the flowering branches of yarrow reduces triglycerides and blood lipids, as well as systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Its aqueous-alcoholic extract has an inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the gastric vagus nerve. Also, the aqueous extract of this plant stimulates humoral and cellular immunity. Research has proven that the methanolic extract of yarrow is able to reduce the relative activity of the atrioventricular node and can also increase the resistance of red blood cells against oxidizing materials. By affecting the hypophysis-gonadal hormonal axis, Yarrow reduces the amount of testosterone and LH hormones and thus reduces spermatogenesis. The flavon present in this plant has the ability to bind to sex hormone receptors and by increasing the sensitivity of the adenylate cyclase system, it reduces the production of sex hormones. Apigenin composition of the plant is an inhibitor of Aromatase, Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase enzymes and stimulates the production of cell death enzymes which is one of the important factors in the treatment of cancer.

Other components of the essential oil of this plant include linalool, 1, 8 cineole, borneol, thujone, camphor and sabinene. This plant should not be used simultaneously with anti-platelet drugs, blood pressure drugs, painkillers, sedatives, and barbiturates.
