Therapeutic effects
Thyme has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-cough, anti-spasmodic and expectorant properties. This plant has high antioxidant properties, anticancer and anticarcinogenic properties. It also has strengthening, digestive, antifungal, antibacterial, anticonvulsant, anthelmintic and anti-rheumatism effects. Due to its high antioxidant properties, in addition to reducing blood fat and LDL, this plant can play a role in inhibiting oxidation. Fresh or dry thyme is used in traditional medicine as a sedative, sexual stimulant and expectorant, which is consumed in the form of tincture or infusion. The essential oil of this plant is used externally with olive oil or other oils on the joints as a warming and surface stimulant.

Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action:

Research results show that thyme essential oil prevents the growth of squamous cell carcinoma from head and neck tumors in humans. Also, the therapeutic and preventive effects of the hydroalcoholic extract of thyme on precancerous lesions and carcinoma of the squamous cells of the prostate gland of rats have been proven, which is related to the active ingredients of thymol and carvacrol. The extract of this plant improves the antioxidant potential and thus helps prevent oxidative stress. The extract of this plant reduces serum cholesterol concentration, without causing any damage to gastritis. Thyme has high antimicrobial effects. Its effective antimicrobial compounds include flavonoids including apigenin, naringin, luteolin and volatile oils containing thymol and carvacrol. The liquid extracted from garden thyme is one of the ingredients of anti-cough syrups, which is used as a flavoring agent. Its essential oil is sometimes used in the form of alcoholic solutions to cure some indigestion, simple diarrhea and nematode removal.

The main and medicinal ingredients:

The hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves and flowering branches of garden thyme has various compounds, the most important of which are thymol and carvacrol, which attribute the biological and therapeutic effects of the plant extract to these compounds. The medicinal parts of this plant are its dry branches and leaves (aerial organ) which contain phenolic and glycosidic terpenoids, aliphatic alcohols, tannins, eugenol, caffeic acid, saponins, rosmarinic acid, apigenin, triterpene. Thyme contains 0.8 to 2.6% of essential oil, most of which are phenols (20 to 80%), monoterpene hydrocarbons including paracymene and gammaterpene.
