Therapeutic effects
Different parts of this plant including leaves, roots, and flowers are used as medicine. Marsh-mallow has anti-cough, anti-chest burning, anti-gastric inflammation, anti-tumor, and anti-viral properties. It also can be used to relieve skin irritations. The most common use of marsh-mallows is to treat respiratory problems and bronchitis. Likewise, marshmallow root extract is suitable for treating burns and skin wounds. This plant is also used for heartburn, indigestion, stomach ulcers, angina, renal calculi, constipation, and colic.

Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action:

Research has shown that the flavonoid compounds found in marsh-mallow root can be effective in reducing the complications of diabetes. This effect improves the activity of the catalase and inhibition of the alpha-amylase enzymes. The aqueous extract of the marshmallow root has an inhibitory effect on the activity of endothelin-1. Also, this is an antispasmodic plant. Research has proven that the polysaccharides of marshmallows have an antitussive effect. The rhamnogalacturonan sugar isolated from the root of marshmallow leads to a decrease in cough. In research, it has been proven that the decoction of marshmallows along with some other plants has an effective antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of asthmatic patients compared to chemical drugs. The flavonoids from the root of this plant cause endothelium-dependent and non-endothelial relaxation in human arteries.

The main and medicinal ingredients:

The root of the marsh-mallow plant contains mucilage, flavonoids, glycosides, and its leaves contain coumarin scopoletin. Also, the root of this plant contains other compounds such as anthocyanin, altin, deoxybenzoic acid, and cyanidin. Other compounds of marshmallow root include quercetin, kaempferol, tannin, lecithin, pectin, and estriol.
