Therapeutic effects
Different organs of fennel are helpful in flatulence, increasing breast milk of mothers, colic, and stomachache. Fennel seeds stimulate the production of female hormones. This plant has anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, expectorant, and pain-relieving effects. It is effective in treating gastrointestinal lesions and osteoporosis with its antioxidant effect. Fennel is also effective in treating neurological disorders, premenstrual syndrome, and dysmenorrhea. This plant contains high antioxidant effects.

Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action:

Fennel is an estrogenic plant. Studies confirmed that estrogens and phytoestrogens have anti-anxiety properties, and fennel contains phytoestrogens. Research has shown that the aqueous extract of fennel reduces acute and chronic pain. The possible mechanism of fennel’s effect may be due to the structural similarity of antol in fennel with dopamine, which binds to dopamine receptors and reduces pain.

The main and medicinal ingredients:

The useable parts of the fennel are roots, leaves, and seeds.
The seed contains oily and sugary substances, mucilage, and essential oil. The main part of seed is antole, it also contains a small amount of tannin, limas oil, fenchone, flandrene, limonene, myrcene, estragole, trans-antole, and caffeine. Fennel seed is the best organ for extracting trans-anthole, it is also rich in phytoestrogens including lignans.
In the root of this plant, there are coumarin compounds, including Bergapten. Likewise, flavonoid compounds, flavonols, phenylpropanoids (transanthole and estragole), oxygenated terpene hydrocarbons, vitamin E, and ascorbic acid have been detected in this plant.

Precautions for use:

Excessive consumption of fennel seeds is toxic. Excessive use of fennel essential oil causes inflammation of the lungs, respiratory disorders, and convulsions. It is forbidden to use this plant during pregnancy.
