Therapeutic effects
The used parts of the borage are its flowers, leaves, and flower-laden branches. This plant has the therapeutic effects of emollient, diaphoretic, diuretic, and reducing blood toxins. The borage flower improves kidney function and controls urinary tract infections, and incontinence. Consumption of at least 5 to 7 days of 70 grams of borage flower in 500 milliliters of water in the amount of 2 to 3 cups in the morning and evening applies the mentioned therapeutic effects. These effects are related to the presence of unsaturated fatty acids in the plant. The gamma linoleic acid present in the borage flower has many physiological effects, such as maintaining the cell membrane and regulating cholesterol metabolism, reducing LDL, healing wounds and inflammation, and improving skin diseases. The oral effect of this plant also appears after 5 to 7 days of continuous consumption. In terms of traditional medicine, the flowers and leaves of this warm-nature plant have an uplifting and refreshing effect on the face.

The hypolipidemic effect of flavonoids, elimination of free radicals, and antioxidant properties in borage are shown in various studies. Alkaline compounds, pyrrolizidine glycosides, and useful lipids found in different parts of borage have been confirmed to have antioxidant activity, protect the gastric mucosa, reduce blood sugar, and moderate cardiovascular complications. Borage is one of the most important medicinal plants in the traditional medicine of Iran and its flowers have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-anxiety, and anti-depressive effects. It is shown that this plant contains large amounts of flavonoids which can induce similar effects by binding to benzodiazepine receptors. It can also be effective in cardiac disease and its antimicrobial and anti-cancer effects are proven.
The main and medicinal ingredients:
The petals of the borage plant have different amounts of flavonoids, saponins, polyphenolic compounds, antioxidant compounds, mucilage, and small amounts of alkaloids (pyrrolizidine type), omega 3, and omega 6 fatty acids. The existence of compounds such as potassium nitrate and calcium salts has also been proven in this species. Also, Iranian borage is a rich source of rosmarinic acid, essential fatty acids (EFA), and the group of omega acids or gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The laboratory examination of the plant’s extract has confirmed the presence of sugar, sugar-bound flavonoids, glycerol, and vitamin E.
