Therapeutic effects
Berberine compound in barberry has therapeutic properties such as anti-parasitic, antimicrobial,
anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and reducing neurological disorders and is also effective in preventing coronary artery disorders. Barberry can be used to quench thirst. Its therapeutic effects have also been seen in liver diseases and amoebic bloody diarrhea. Another feature of barberry is reducing sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride.

Pharmacological effects and mechanism of action:

Research has proven that berberine in the barberry plant can improve liver function and bile secretion to reduce body fat. Also, berberine is effective for reducing blood sugar like metformin, and its mechanism includes inhibition of aldose reductase, induction of glycolysis, and prevention of insulin resistance by increasing the expression of insulin receptors. This plant has a great effect in treating leishmaniasis, preventing the growth of bacteria, reducing smooth muscle contraction, reducing inflammation, preventing the accumulation of platelets, stimulating bile secretion, and reducing blood pressure. Research has proven that barberry plant alkaloids are able to increase T-cell-mediated immunity. In addition, the barberry plant extract is effective in inhibiting the activator protein of human hepatoma cells. Studies also show that barberry extract has antihistaminic and anticholinergic properties and inhibits acetylcholinesterase. Consuming the barberry plant inhibits the enzyme tyrosine decarboxylase and tyrosine hydroxylase, which leads to a decrease in dopamine compounds in the cells.

Different parts of the barberry plant (root, bark, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit) are used medicinally. This plant contains alkaloids berberine, berbamine, palmatine, oxyoctanine, and zathroricin. Berberine is the most important alkaloid isolated from this plant. Barberry also contains large amounts of phenolic and triterpenoid compounds.
